A.D. Copier is probably the best known and most important glass designer in the Netherlands. Copier already started working for the Glass Factory Leerdam at the age of 13. The then director saw a talent for drawing in the young glass etcher and sent him to the course for typography in Utrecht and then to the Academy of Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam. In 1923, at the age of 22, Copier was officially employed as a glass artist at Leerdam. In 1924 A.D. Copier designed his first Leerdam Unica.

In addition to his work as a glass artist, he was also very important as a designer of industrial glass for the Glass Factory Leerdam, culminating in the famous Guild service with the guild glass (wine glass) that is still being produced. Besides Leerdam, Copier also worked for other important glass factories in Murano, Acquoy and Novy Bor. From 1950-1952 Andries Copier was director of the School for Applied Arts in Amsterdam (now Rietveld Academy)
