First trek series to be set on a station rather than a travelling ship. First to be created without Gene Roddenberry and first to have a black Captain as the central character played by Avery Brooks. Although in the third season the starship Defiant is added for more away team stories.

Basic premise of the first three seasons has a space station parked near a stable wormhole which was built by the imperialistic Cardassians ruling the nearby planet Bajor. After a liberating guerilla war, the Bajorians invite the United Federation of Planets to manage the station. Captain Benjamin Sisko (Brooks) arrives as the assigned officer in charge.

On the other side of the wormhole is the unexplored Gamma Quadrant and the home of powerful aliens the Bajorans worship as the "Prophets". The Bajorans revere Sisko as the Prophets' "Emmisary", a religous figure that he is uncomfortable with, but gradually accepts the role.

DEEP SPACE 9 and Bajor quickly become a center for exploration, interstellar trade, political maneuvering and finally open conflict. Threats come from not only Cardassians, Romulans, and Klingons from the Alpha Quadrant, but later from the Dominion, a powerful empire in the Gamma Quadrant ruled by a race of shapeshifters. The starship USS Defiant is assigned to help protect the station.
