Paul Newman stars as a drunken drifter in New Orleans who obtains a job reading editorials on a right-wing radio staion. He gets involved with part-time hooker Geraldine (Woodward) and befriends naive social worker Rainey (Tony Perkins, 'Psycho'). The station sponsors a big political rally and Rainey plans to assassinate a candidate there.
