The Kamakhya temple is devoted to mother goddess Kamakhya, which is one amongst the 52 Shakti Pithas. It’s the primary temple, devoted toKamakhya, within a complex of temples devoted towards ten Mahavidyas:Bhuvaneshvari, Bagalamukhi, Chinnamasta, Tripura Sundari, Tara, Kali, Bhairavi,Dhumavati, Matangi and Kamala.

Of these, Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala reside insidethe primary temple whereas another seven reside in individual temples. It’s animportant pilgrimage place to go for general Hindu especially for Tantricworshipers and to seek cure from Black Magic.

What is the Puja that is done to remove Black Magic:

Sadhu & Agorhi’s who reside near the temple perform Pujaand rituals to cure individuals from Black magic. These Sadhus’s can be foundin and around the temple premise.

Why the Kamakhya Temple so special?

In ancient times Kamakhya was  the place of Tantrikism and Black Magic cure(Still this is followed). It is also most likely that this is an ancient Khasisacrificial site. This is also the only temple where ten Mahavidyas residetogether.

Kamakhya devi is famous as the bleeding goddess. Themythical womb and vagina of Shakti are supposedly installed in the 'Garvagriha'or sanctum of the temple. In the month of Ashaad (June), the goddess bleeds ormenstruates. At this time, the Brahmaputra river near Kamakhya turns red. Thetemple then remains closed for 3 days and holy water is distributed among thedevotees of Kamakhya devi. There is no scientific proof that the blood actuallyturns the river red. Some people say that the priests pour vermilion into the waters. But symbolically, menstruation is the symbol of a woman's creativity and powerto give birth. So, the deity and temple of Kamakhya celebrates this 'shakti' orpower within every woman.
