The song fell one step away from securing another No. 1 R&B single for Eddie, stopping at No. 2. Club play made He's a Friend an underground club classic. The song also achieved a peak of No. 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as climbing to No. 7 on the Dance Chart.
