John Meyer is one of South Africa’s leading contemporary realists. Born in Bloemfontein on 13 August 1942, he spent his formative childhood years in Klerksdorp, a small Highveld mining town west of Johannesburg in what is now Gauteng Province.
Meyer studied at the Johannesburg Technical College School of Art. From 1967 to 1969 Meyer worked as an illustrator in London, where he freelanced for magazines such as Readers Digest and newspapers like The Times and The Telegraph, as well as for various advertising agencies in the UK. He moved back to South Africa in 1969, where he became the country’s first full-time, specialist illustrator servicing the advertising industry.
He began to paint professionally in the early ’70s. Meyer has put his indelible stamp on the genres of landscape, portraiture and narrative art. John Meyer has dabbled in landscape and portraiture, but his most recent work has been in narrative art. These newest works are moody and cinematic, immediately sweeping the viewer up in a fabricated world that reflects our own, full of moral and emotional uncertainty, back to us with heightened tension and drama.
