Lilith, the first wife of Adam according to Jewish legend
Beautifully cast piece is based on the Babylonian tablet known as the Burney Relief,
seen in the British Museum. Long associated with Lilith, the carving depicts a winged,
bird-footed woman. It may originally have been meant to represent Ishtar or Ereshkigal.
Some people (with no formal academic qualifications) think this is Ishtar, an ancient Sumerian goddess,
the experts (with qualifications) in ancient Mesopotamian culture refer to this woman as
"The Queen of the Night" she is on a 4,000-year-old Mesopotamian relief and none of the experts
in this field can establish who the figure is. In recent times she has been adopted
into New Age beliefs as representing Lilith and this is how she is presented here.
The display card reads "Lilith is a modern Goddess patterned after the deities of the Assyrian world.
With the wings and feet of an eagle, her element is air, and her mystic vision
is as sharp as the worldly vision of the eagle. Lilith holds two sacred hoops made by joining together the opposite ends of two sticks.
In this way, she shows that sacred circles are
made by overcoming two opposites, divisions and dualism's.
Lilith's name is derived from the Babylonian words, Lili, meaning a male devil, and Liatu, meaning a female devil.
She is not a virgin, but neither has she known a man. She has an earthly form,
but is one with the sky. Her mind is the temple of science, but she hears her heart just as much."
