The last sailing ship employed by the US navy in active service, the Monongahela had taken an active part in the Civil War as a single screw steam vessel with auxiliary sails. In 1884 her engines were removed and she became a full rigged sailing ship. The original painting by Gordon Grant was presented to the US Naval Academy by the class of 1898.
