1880s Nicholas Muller and Sons NY cast metal oil lamp Signed and UNIQUE. In the best of my knowledge, is all original, chimney too, shade looks original too, original "Duplex" burner. Look at the pictures to appreciate the elaborated work of the lamp's body. Never converted to electrical. I did not change the wick, it is unused, lamp seems to be used though because the inside has some burn marks, burner is marked " Duplex" and made by B.B. & Co. " Possibly a high lead content. At this time there was no aluminum, but by the use of a lead based metal he could make much sharper and better detail castings than he could using cast iron. Cast iron chilled too quickly to get the projection of some of his wonderful patterns." (From NAWCC Bulletin # 238, article by Jim Shawn). Muller made clocks that were marketed by all the major Connecticut clock manufacturers, with their movements fitted to the Muller castings. There were likely a great number undocumented, as the casting numbers go up to # 902. Probably the most sought after is casting number 135, titled ball players, circa 1868. It is a real time capsule of early Americana. There is one on display at Cooperstown in the Baseball hall of fame. This lamp is a very unique piece, signed on back with number 973
