S.A. Walls Buster Welch Aluminum Cutting Bit Sweet Iron Low Curb with Bit Hobble

"Folks, my bits are a lot like my horses. They're pretty to look at, but it's really all about the ride."
...S.A. Walls

S.A. Walls has been in the stirrup business for 24 years.  There’s not much in the industry that he hasn’t seen. Top-of-the-line saddlemakers in the cutting horse world have been using his aluminum stirrups for many years.  He also is known for making a great little cutting bit very similar in style and weight to the S/W cutting bits sold by Joe Stiles and Buster Welch.  Handmade, balanced, crafted with time-honored designs with a little bit of his special touch, S. A. Walls bits have been handmade in Mena Arkansas in the U.S.A. by Americans since 1982.  Like his stirrups, all of his bits are handmade. He is a big proponent of sweet-iron mouthpieces using use the finest American-made materials that he can find.

This is a well maintained vintage S.A. Walls cutter with a very nice braided bit hobble with a low sweet iron curb mouthpiece.  Very universal, this bit can be used on both young and older horses that work well with a mid level mouthpiece.  Weighing less than 9 ounces, this bit allows for the natural movement of the horse's head.  The lightweight Aluminum shank provides authority when needed with a reduced angle increases signal and slows the response from the rider's hand.  It can have a relatively quick signal with a tight curb or increased palate pressure with a loose curb chain.

The grazing bit came to be the "go to" bit for many cutters.   It was is a mild bit with aluminum shanks and a steel low port mouthpiece that a horse could pack without becoming distracted by the rider’s hands.  The curb chain could be tightened for more severity.  The aluminum shanks measure 7-1/2 inches long with a 2-1/2 inch tall purchase for a 3 to 1 leverage ratio.  The bit weighs under 9 ounces so it is a very nice light bit for a light and responsive horse that prefers a lightweight bit.  This bit features a swept back grazing style aluminum cheek.  This is a perfectly balanced bit and will make a great addition to your bit collection and will look great in any show ring setting.
