Hopi 10-1/2" WHITE OGRE KACHINA DOLL, Genuine Hand Carved KATSINA, Milton Howard

For your consideration is an outstanding example of the Wiharu aka Hopi White Ogre Kachina Doll. Hand carved and painted by master Hopi carver Milton Howard, he is depicted in top grade cottonwood and painted with natural dyes made from elements off the reservation. The Wiharu ( White Ogre) often appear together with the Nata'aska (Black Ogre) during the Bean Dance ceremony.

The carving shows the forceful personality that these katsina are known for. Exceptionally detailed, he has a fearsome face and stark unblinking eyes. He carries a bow and arrows as well as a saw that he would drag to scare children with. They are disciplinarians reminding the children to be good and demand food from the parents to feed the Katsinam within the Kivas.

This fabulous kachina measures approx 10-1/2" tall (including base) x 6-1/4" wide and 7" deep (including saw). He stands on a cliff with traditional pueblo dwellings. This beautiful Hopi White Ogre Kachina Doll is signed and hallmarked on the base. Comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

A spectacular piece of Hopi master carving to add to your Kachina collection!

(These are custom made at time of order. Please allow 2-3 weeks for actual shipment. As each hand carved kachina doll is unique, there may be slight artistic differences in color, size and details. This is an excellent representation of the handmade item you will get)

* Milton Howard, master kachina carver, was born on Feb. 8, 1964 in Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo-Hopi reservation. His father, also a kachina carver, is from the Third Mesa area and his mother is from the Rocky Ridge area. He is married and has three children. He took up carving as a young boy, learning from other members of his family, but he was not serious about it until he was living in Albuquerque, in his early twenties, going to school to be an electrician and carving with his cousins, Jerry and Dan Bert, in his free time. He sold his dolls to his classmates, carving kachinas for orders only. At about 30 years of age he made the decision to start carving full time. Master Hopi carver Milton Howard is world renown for his carving skills and many collectors snap up his creations when available. His works of art are found in some of the finest art galleries around the world. *

* The Kachina doll is given in hopes of abundance and health as well as for education. The Hopis were the original carvers, using a single piece of cottonwood root. The Navajo began carving in their own creative way, adding feathers, fur and leather to their creations. There are over 350 Kachina dolls, each with its own attributes. *
