Buddha Statue - Antique Indonesian Style Bronze Javanese Teaching Buddha - 30cm/12" Measures (Height) 30cm/12" A beautifully cast Indonesian (Java) Buddha in 13th century Majapahit style. This magnificent Buddha is stood samapada, loose mounted to a wood pedestal. His robe cascades pleasingly over both of his shoulders. A portion of the garment that covers the left wrist falls behind the figure. The lower hem of the robe falls all the way down so that the under-cloth or skirt is completely covered. The hem of the robe is held in the left hand, in traditional Indonesian style. Although the style resembles Dvaravati images carved in Thailand, the present Buddha is more sensuous than most Dvaravati Buddhas. The Buddha here is an appealing blend of Gupta, Dvaravati, Khmer and Indonesian characteristics. He holds his hands in the Teaching or dharmachakra mudra. In sanskrit dharmachakra means the 'Wheel of Dharma'. This mudra symbolises one of the most important moments in the life of Buddha, the occasion when he preached to his companions the first sermon after his Enlightenment in the Deer Park at Sarnath. It therefore denotes the setting into motion of the Wheel of the teaching of the Dharma. Provenance: Ex- private London, UK collection. All items are guaranteed to be as described.
