This song anthology represents a survey of the world's song litera-ture. It is as complete as the limitations of a single volume permit. The songs are representative of the finest efforts of each composer, yet none present any major difficulty either vocally or pianistically. The editors have carefully added breath marks. The singer need not necessarily observe them all, but should use the signposts of the text and the musical phrase to determine which are necessary to him. A good performance demands a complete understanding of words in relation to music. To aid those whose knowledge of language is limited, English translations have been included. For songs in Rus-sian, Czechoslavakian, Hungarian and Norwegian, which are not usually sung in their original tongue, translations have been added within the music. Literal translations are found on page 4 through 15. The early English and Italian songs which were set by the composers to figured bass only have received new bass realizations in the simple style of the period. This hook will aid young singers in making the acquaintance of the vast song literature of the world, and we hope lead them into explor-ing the complete works of the many composers whose works are only savored here.
