Care & Maintenance: Grow in deep, fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, except P. alpinum
and its cultivars, which require very sharply drained soil. California
poppies can grow in poor, well-drained soil in full sun. Meconopsis
poppies grow in humus-rich, leafy, moist but well-drained, neutral to
slightly acidic soil, open enough to prevent stagnation and rot in
winter; site in partial shade with shelter from cold, drying winds.
Mulch generously, and water in dry spells in summer. Short-lived
perennials, e.g.M. betonicifolia, are less likely to be monocarpic in moist conditions, and its flowering is prevented until several crowns have been formed.
