ABOUT THIS BOOK: The Sculpture of Ursula von Rydingsvard Hardcover – October 1, 1996 by Dore Ashton (Author), Marek Bartelik (Author). Ursula von Rydingsvard possesses one of the most original voices in contemporary American art. This beautiful monograph presents more than twenty years of work as it has evolved from solitary sculptures to grand, increasingly complex ensembles in which powerful forms expand in wall-like masses and create dramatic environments with a sense of contained energy. The sculpture is constructed from lengths of cedar beams that have been laminated together, carved, and sometimes darkened by rubbing with graphite or stain, combining aspects of the minimalist and the primitive in powerful assemblages that suggest nightmare and enchantment, ritual and elegy. The work, while totally abstract, is surprisingly rich and elegant. Ursula von Rydingsvard was born in Germany during World War II of Polish and Ukrainian parents and spent her childhood in refugee camps there before coming to the United States in 1950. She studied at the universities of New Hampshire (Durham), Miami, California (Berkeley), and Columbia (Master of Fine Arts). The psychic landscape of her childhood, which has been com-pared to that portrayed in Jerzy Kosinski's Painted Bird, has been filtered through her training as a modernist artist and the influence of classical sculpture, Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti, and Eva Hesse.
