Kyoto Hanamachi
(Lit: "Flower Towns" or, Geisha Enclaves)
Beautiful picture book revealing the 6 Geisha enclaves of Kyoto, Gion Kobu, Miyagawacho, Kaishichiken, Pontocho, Gion Higashi. and Shimabara. The first 5 of these are known as "Gokaigai", or, Five Flower Towns, and most have origins dating back to the early Edo Period (1603 - 1868). They each have their own unique history, and characteristics.
This book is a beautiful photographic journal of these special areas and their Geisha and Maiko.
Though the main text is Japanese, the book includes several English mini essays and picture captioning, explaining the history and venues. Also includes thorough contact information.
This is a good resource for those with an interest in traditional hospitality, Geisha and Maiko life.
