PANCAKE PROBES ARE FRAGILE

 

Among geiger hobbyists, the popular slogan is:

"Once you've gone pancake,

you'll never go back."

Descriptive numbers used to describe rocks are based

on standard pancake probe measurements. The 2"

diameter sensor is in standard pancakes. High

sensitivity is the main feature for standard pancake

probes, but there are deficiencies too.  The sensor-

detector in every # 44-9 pancake probe has a

fragile membrane which can fail suddenly. During

my rockhounding years, I have lost FIVE standard

pancake sensors: two quit working while in use; two

burst their membrane while being mailed to other

states; and a new sensor broke when I installed it

into a probe case. Sensors are ruined by exposure

to thin air at high altitude (above 8,000 ft).

The high performance of this geiger probe arises

entirely from its large 3" wide SENSOR, which was

MADE IN UKRAINE, December 1989. It is "new-old-

stock," with manufacturing date marked on the back

side of the sensor. Ukraine became sovereign (self-

rule) in March 1991, and independent in August 1991.

Most of the Soviet Union's nuclear weapons were

made in Ukraine, but those weapons were transferred

to Russia when 1991independence was achieved. I

bought these P3 sensors directly from Ukraine; the

2018 shipping box is shown in the last photo.

P3 GEIGER PANCAKE PROBE

Pike's Peak is a Colorado mountain with a high

altitude paved road, all the way to the summit:

14,100 ft. A geiger inventor carried a P3

pancake probe to this mountain's summit, he had

NO DAMAGE to the probe's sensor!  The Ukraine-

made sensor's membrane is more durable than the

membrane on any North American geiger probe.

European geigers use a probe-voltage of DC 450

volts, while North American geiger manufacturers

use 900 volts. The geiger inventor created an

original step-down DC voltage circuit board,

so that all our USA geigers now fully work

with this Ukrainian-made sensor-detector.

DETECTING SUNKEN ROCKS AT THE

"FIELD OF BURIED BOULDERS,"

JURASSIC CANYON, GRANTS NM

Measurements done on this probe are approximately

70% higher than those from standard 44-9 pancakes.

The measurements are also reduced LESS by distance

to the mineral source. My favorite field to search as

a rockhound for buried rocks, is the "Field of Buried

Boulders," located at Jurassic Canyon, 20 miles N.W.

from Grants NM. This is the richest surface-level

uranium field in the entire USA. The P3 probe is

especially powerful at detecting signals at greater

distances from the radioactive source rocks. The P3

geiger probe can detect large (5 - 10 lb) active

rocks buried up to a foot deep, underground.

 

 

Pancake probes are the main standard of

high efficiency. End-window probes are 30% as

sensitive as pancakes, and side-window probes are

merely 15% as sensitive as standard 44-9 pancakes.

The P3 pancake probe sensor is 70% MORE

SENSITIVE than the Ludlum standard 44-9

pancake probe. The P3 probe is especially powerful

at detecting signals at greater distances from the

radioactive source rocks.

DOES YOUR LUDLUM GEIGER HAVE

A BNC PROBE-SOCKET, OR A

WIDE "LUDLUM-C" SOCKET?

Most geigers use the common low-cost narrow

BNC socket, which matches BNC cables that I

provide.  But some Ludlum geigers have a wide

"Ludlum-C socket" to accept a probe's cable. If your

adapter so that the BNC cables can be used
