➤ DESCRIPTION

Malabar is the name given to a town in the Indian state of Kerala, which is located on the Malabar coast. It is often stated that the Malabar pepper must have originated from this town to be called the Malabar pepper. Although this may have been true at one time, today Malabar pepper simply refers to larger black peppercorns. However, the name Malabar does have some historical significance. The importance of the peppercorns from the Malabar region began with the Arab spice trade.

The spice trade from the Malabar coast was controlled by Arab traders as early as 1500 BC. The traders sailed along the coastline and then climbed the quagmires to go further inland. They then sold the spices they bought in Europe as well as Egypt.

Many of the Arab traders who travelled to the Malabar coast to trade settled there, and this is one of the reasons why many of the local people are Muslim today.

The trade in black peppercorns with Europe was particularly profitable. It was one of the motivations for Vasco de Gama to seek a route to India that bypassed Africa.

The British East India Company would allow the pepper trade in Thalasseri without paying duties and the town would develop into an important port and centre of trade. In the 18th century, the British would gain administrative authority over the entire region after its annexation by the Battle of Sree Rangapatnam.

Towards the end of the 18th century, the British East India Company would establish a spice plantation near Thalassery. Along with pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg were grown on the plantation. The plantation was the largest cinnamon plantation at the time. The British also constructed the Tellicherry lighthouse and built a warehouse in the late 18th century.

Today, pepper from Tellicherry is still valuable, although most of the world's supply of black pepper comes from Vietnam.
