AFRICAN WOODEN CUPS - Thuya Wood
The Thuya tree is a Coniferous mountain Cyprus tree indigenous to the Western Atlas mountains of North Africa. Its burl is a dense wood with a high oil content. Its color varies from rich golden brown to nearly black. This unique tree produces a large underground root with many outgrowths. The Greeks named it “Thuya” meaning sacrifice, because they used the oil distilled from it as incense in their religious ceremonies. Part of the root can be cut away to use for these crafts, which does not kill the tree. So this makes the meaning “sacrifice” apply to the tree itself which sacrifices a piece of itself for the sake of the artisans, and the root rejuvenates itself. Made by local craftsmen in a small coastal town called Essaouira in Morocco. The finish that’s been applied is a hand rubbed shellac.
We personally are addicted to these pieces. Not only is EVERY SINGLE ONE DIFFERENT IN SHAPE, but the burl patterns, and the wonderful smell inside each box is wonderful and unique. “You can’t buy just one!”
