Cherished Cats and Childhood Capers is the true story of growing up in Defiance, Ohio in the 1960's with 14 cats. A memoir of growing up in Defiance, a small town in northwest Ohio, in the '60s. The author's adventures included one sister and 14 cats. The book details memories of Spencer School in Defiance, shopping at G.C. Murphy's - a popular five and dime store, and visiting the Toledo Zoo.

We had a black and white television - a small screen in a big wooden cabinet, and we were happy to be able to choose from three or four channels. There was no cable service or plasma TV during my childhood.

I walked to school each day - half a mile, uphill both ways, in all kinds of weather.

I grew up without a cell phone. Our only phone was a black, corded model with a rotary dial, and a five digit telephone number. We had a party line, shared with three other families. If we needed to use a phone when we were away from home, there was a pay phone on almost every street corner.

There was no GPS in our car. We found our way across the country, using paper maps we got free at the gas station. The gas station attendant filled the gas tank, checked the oil, and cleaned the windshield. We didn't even have to get out of the car!

The 60's was a quiet, relatively safe time, and kids could play outside all day long without their parents worrying about bad things happening. Most mothers were stay-at-home moms who cooked, cleaned, ironed, and baked cookies. There was no need to lock the doors, except at night.

Life was never boring in Defiance, Ohio!

Excerpt: "Our class went to the school library for a research project. As I was looking for a book, a note that was folded up like a football flew over the top of a six-foot-high bookshelf and landed at my feet. It was a request for my friend Cindy and me to go on a double date with Randy and his best friend, Tim.
The following day, a five-pound bag of sour balls mysteriously appeared in my locker, along with another note requesting a date. I found out where Randy's locker was and returned the candy, along with a note saying that Cindy and I had to work on Friday night, so we could not go on a date with them.
A day or two later, the persistent guys asked where we worked, and I told them we worked at Murphy's in Defiance. (I actually did work there, but Cindy didn't have a job.) I thought that was the end of them, until they showed up at Murphy's on Friday night and tried to talk to me while I was working. I didn't even know Randy's name yet. He had been signing the notes with his nickname, "Preacher Boy."
Randy found out where I lived, and on Good Friday, he dropped by my house unexpectedly. When I opened the door, my hair full of bright pink plastic curlers that were as large as orange juice cans, there he was, asking me to join him for a cruise through downtown Defiance…"
