The name “Aragonite” comes from the location of the original find in Molina de Aragon, Spain. This specimen is from Asni (Atlas Mountains), Morocco. Aragonite forms from precipitating hot water that traps in organic matter, such as leaves, twigs & moss. It is a pseudomorph from gypsum & calcite. It is often found in cracks & cavities with iron ores in hot springs & geysers. Chemical formula: CaCO3, hardness 3.5-4; density is 2.93-2.95
