PLAUTUS, COMOEDIAE XX, LATIN COMEDIES, 20 PLAYS, AMPHITRYON, CASINA BASEL, Switzerland,1558. Good, 12mo(6.75x5"), 1/2 leather, 935 pp. Bound in 19th C half calf over marbled paper covered boards, re-backed at some point with original back strip laid down, spine with four raised bands; later plain end-papers. The contents are mispaginated at points but complete. Book has decorative woodcut initials throughout. The binding is in good condition only being rubbed and worn with some chipping to spine ends and corners bumped.  The spine is cracked up center (see photo) and the gutter of the text block accordingly split at that point, the corners are bumped and rubbed. The text block is otherwise firm. The title page is heavily cropped and laid down, the initial and final few leaves are browned and with a small amount of softening. There is some light chipping to the lower outer margins towards the front, with slight water staining to the initial few signatures, but contents otherwise generally in good condition.  Some light toning throughout, with scattered spotting and sporadic minor creases or marks.  A few signatures toward rear of the book have, presumably later, ink marginalia.  There is a small water stain appearing to the fore edge through the last few signatures.  The top edge is close cropped nearly to headings at some points.  Quite the distinctive book indeed.
