1. What Espumizan® is and what it is used for
Espumizan® contains the active substance simethicone, which belongs to a group of medicinal products called "gastrointestinal substances".
The active substance of Espumizan®, simethicone, breaks down the gas bubbles accumulated in the stomach and intestines. The gases released in this way can be released naturally.
Application :
For the symptomatic treatment of complaints related to gas in the stomach or intestines, for example gas accumulation (flatulence) or bloating and a feeling of fullness.
In preparation for an imaging study of the stomach and intestines, for example, X-ray and ultrasound.
Espumizan is used to treat children from b years, adolescents and adults.
You should consult a doctor if you do not feel better or if your condition worsens.
2. What you need to know before you take Espumizan®
Do not take Espumizan®
if you are allergic to simethicone, sunset yellow FCF (E 110), methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218) or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in b)
Warnings and precautions
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking Espumizan*
Complaints related to gas can also be a sign of more serious stomach or intestinal problems. Symptoms may include:
a feeling of heaviness and fullness
belching
bowel rumbling
swelling
If these complaints appear and/or persist for a long time, you should see a doctor. He will check if you have a condition that requires other treatment.
Other medicines and Espumizan
There are no known interactions with other drugs.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine.
No negative effects are expected if Espumizan is taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding, since the active substance simethicone does not pass from the stomach and intestines into the bloodstream. However, there are no clinical data on the use of Espumizan in pregnant women.
Driving and using machines
Espumizan has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
3. How to take Espumizan
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Dosage
The recommended dosage is:
For the symptomatic treatment of complaints related to gas in the stomach or bowels, such as gas accumulation (flatulence) or bloating and a feeling of fullness:
Age Dosage Frequency of reception
Children from b years, teenagers and adults 2 capsules (equivalent to 80 mg simethicone) 3 to 4 times daily
In preparation for an imaging study of the stomach and intestines, for example, X-ray and ultrasound:
The day before the examination The morning of the test day
2 capsules 3 times a day (equivalent to a total of 240 mg simethicone) 2 capsules (equivalent to 80 mg simethicone)
Application in children
Espumizan* is not recommended for children under 6 years of age and newborns. Other pharmaceutical forms are suitable.
Method of administration
Take Espumizan during or after a meal, and if necessary before going to bed.
Note : It is also possible to take Espumizan after surgery.
Take Espumizan* while you have complaints.
If necessary, Espumizan can be used for a long time. But if the complaints remain, please see “Warnings and precautions” in item 2.
Please consult your doctor or pharmacist if you think that the effect of Espumizan is too strong or too weak.
If you have taken more than the required dose of Espumizan
No harmful effects are expected in the event of an overdose of Espumizan. Even large amounts of Espumizan are tolerated without problems.
The active substance of Espumizan, simethicone, causes the gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines to break up in a completely physical way. Simethicone does not pass into the bloodstream.
If you forget to take Espumizan
You can take the missed dose at any time.
If you have stopped taking Espumizan
You may have complaints again after stopping Espumizan
If you have any further questions related to the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. How to store Espumizan
Keep out of the reach of children!
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the blister or carton after EXP. The expiration date corresponds to the last day of the specified month.
To be stored below 30°C.
Do not dispose of medicines down the drain or in the household waste container. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
6. Contents of the pack and additional information
What Espumizan contains
The active substance is: simethicone.
One soft capsule of Espumizan* contains 40 mg of simethicone.
The other ingredients are: Methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E 218) [Ph. Eur], gelatin, glycerol (85 percent), quinoline yellow (E 104), sunset yellow FCF (E 110).
What Espumizan looks like and contents of the pack
Espumizan capsules are almost round, yellow soft gelatin capsules with a seam and a smooth surface. The contents of the capsules are colorless and may be slightly cloudy.
