COVER: Gambling U. S. A. Where the law ends; The Cantidates: Paintings in full color by NORMAN ROCKWELL; Cover Photograph by Melvin Sokolsky.

FEATURED STORY: The grin flashes. The long, bony fingers tighten. First, a charcoal rough from photographs and sketches. Throw it away, make another. Doctor that one up. Squeeze out the paint and begin. That's Norman Rockwell at work. The subjects this time candidates Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater. To get his men, America's favorite illustrator flew 6,000 miles, ducked Pinkertons in pantries, climbed back stairways, kept vigil in the Fish Bowl -- and drew fast. For his story and the paintings, see:
I Paint the Candidates, By NORMAN ROCKWELL. [Not only are there full page portraits of the candidates, but there is a nice article written AND illustrated by Rockwell. He tells the story of painting the portraits, and illustrates some of the scenes (such as the artist himself being photographed by Goldwater, the artist looking at his handiwork, etc.) Terrific article for Rockwell fans!]

ENTERTAINMENT: A Girl Named Sam. SAMANTHA EGGAR, that is. "The young British actress, whom almost everyone calls Sam, has a kind of youngling charm that seems at odds with the steamy husband-filcher she played in PSYCHE 59." [Nice feature, with beautiful pictures, especially a nice full page photo in a wet man's shirt in front of a pool. Very nice!] Produced by Ira Mothner, Photographed by John Vachon.

THE NATIONAL SCENE:
What Is an Extremist? By George B. Leonard.
A Tax Cut Every Year? By T George Harris. "ARTHUR F. BURNS, economic advisor in the first Eisenhower term, studies the success of the 1964 tax cut, passed by the Democratic administration. It should lead, he believes, to annual cuts."

Big Business Is It Too Big? By Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey.
