ABOUT THIS BOOK: The excavations carried out on the site of the Royal Castle in Buda after the Second World War brought to light some very interesting discoveries for the scholars of ceramics. Simple evidence was found to show that at the court of King Matthias Corvinus there was a workshop which produced majolica, and was one of the first in Europe to turn out ceramics decorated with coloured tin glazes. Remarkable stove tiles were discovered which originated from the courts of Hungarian kings or lords from as far back as the fourteenth century. These clearly illustrate the excellent modelling talent of the Hungarian master craftsmen. In the second half of the fifteenth century these tiles were replaced by another kind with rich colouring and great variety of ornamentation which reflected the influence of the best artistic achievements of the period. Due to the Turkish occupation of the country, this art gradually declined in Hungary in the sixteenth century. However, through the intermediary of Austria and Poland it did for a time make itself felt even in Western Europe.
