From Foreword:

  THIS little book is primarily a manual of indoctrination or general orientation for young men entering the theological schools of the Episcopal Church. Its usefulness is by no means limited to such a restricted group because it speaks in a straightforward and penetrating way even to those of us already in the Ministry. There is in the following pages much wisdom distilled from the mature experience of the author's life as a conscientious priest, a skillful teacher, and an understanding spiritual director.

 

The Episcopal Church has waited a long time for such a book of counsel and all of us are indebted to Dr. Klein for finding the time within an already full schedule to undertake this work on our behalf and at the specific request of his colleagues.

The premises, implicit rather than explicit, of the author's discussion are twofold. First, a theological school properly understood is neither simply a graduate school of theology or professional school nor a religious community. A seminary has aspects of both.

Secondly, the vocation, that state of life to which one is called, of the seminarian is both a ministerial one by anticipation, i.e. the vocation as such is not something which begins only with ordination, and it is a calling to specific responsibilities and privileges which characterize the member of a particular educational-religious community. This is to say that vocation is always a futuristic concept and at the same time involves the immediate present.

As a way of life the path of the seminarian is beset by many ambiguities and even contradictions. This little book provides some guide-posts along the road.
