On The Good Ship Lollipop by The Persuasions
After more than three decades of spreading the gospel of a cappella, the Persuasions recorded their first album for children. Though it's aimed primarily at the little ones, say one- to five-year-olds, it's hard not to enjoy it no matter your age. There are a host of treats, including "Teddy Bears' Picnic," "A Cappella Fellas" (written for the group by label head and producer Leib Ostrow), and the title track. The story that Jerry Lawson spins to frame "On Top of Spaghetti" is not to be missed. ~ Ross Boissoneau, All Music Guide
As adept at percussive vocal effects as they are at soaring quartet-style gospel harmonies. -- People
The Persuasions, premiere a cappella soulsters since 1961, turn out a delightful first children's album and bring their distinctive harmonies and a joyful and loving spirit to new children's songs and classics. Baritone lead singer Jerry Lawson, tenor "Sweet" Joe Russell, bass Jimmy Hayes, tenor Jayotis Washington and baritone Bernard "B.J." Jones (a former Drifter) are joined by The Lollipop Kids Chorus-also a cappella. The result is tender enchantment. Hayes' deep lead vocal is unforgettable, especially in "Teddy Bears' Picnic." Lawson and the rest treat "My Daddy Do, Too," by Dan Conley ("Yes, I know my Mommy love me, my Daddy do, too"), with aching gentleness; and they offer "I Love You (There's No Doubt About It)" with absolute conviction. Other selections include: "On the Good Ship Lollipop," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," the original "A Cappella Fellas" and the doo-wop-style "Persuasions' Nursery Rhyme Medley."
