This is a great vintage coin tie clip that features what I believe is a Columbian 5 Centavos Coin. I’m not a numismatist, but from the images I have seen it looks to be similar. If anyone knows that it is a different coin, please let me know so I can make the correction. The clip has the silver coin in the center with a gold tone metal mounting. The picture depicted on the coin is a liberty cap surrounded by a wreath or two stalks of wheat. It is marked “Republica De Colombia”. The cap was a symbol of freedom during the American and French Revolutions and Columbia adopted the symbol. The word "Libertad" is written on the band of the hat. This 5 Centavos Coin was minted from 1942 to 1966. This coin is dated 1966. Columbia is located in the northwest corner of South America and joins the continent to Central America. The Republic of Columbia is known for its coffee.

It is signed on the back “Shields” and is most likely gold plated. The coin measures approximately ¾ of an inch in diameter. The tie clip is 1 inch across and ¾ of an inch tall. This was made by Shields of Fifth Avenue, which was a men’s jewelry outlet. They existed from the late 1940s until they closed in the late 1960s. I believe they made a series of “Coins of the World” and this probably had matching cufflinks at one time.

The clip is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There is some slight finish wear, normal for the age and usage. You don’t see it without magnification.

This would be a great clip for anyone with ties to Columbia. Perfect for your favorite coin collector or Numismatist or to add to your collection of vintage designer tie clips.
