Julius Caesar was born in Rome in 100 B. C. --destined to become the empire's greatest general and most brilliant statesman. He served Rome as High Priest, praetor, and counsel, coordinating laws, reforming the calendar, and distributing land to the poor. As a military leader he successfully conducted aggressive campaigns in Gaul, Germany, England, and Spain, bringing glory and spoils to Rome. He was daring in his battle concepts and his legions used new and startling tactics and armaments.

Caesar the man is also vividly portrayed in this account of his life and work. He was a bold leader who inspired pride and loyalty in his soldiers. He possessed the wisdom to know when to make a generous peace with an enemy.  As a political leader he knew that Rome could not remain unified through arms alone, but needed a just and lawful government, and to this end he worked with speed and tireless energy.

Here is a fascinating biography that gives a lively picture of the multi-faceted Caesar---the general, the statesman, and the man.
