Cutrer/ University of Texas Institute of Texan Cultures at San Antonio, ISBN # 0-86701-012-6, First Edition,  copyright 1985/  English involvement with Texas began when 114 sailors were set ashore by Captain John Hawkins about 30 miles north of Tampico in New Spain after a disastrous encounter with the Spanish fleet in Veracruz harbor. So began an 11 month trek over 3000 miles of often hostile wilderness. Only three of the 114 survived. Through the writings of one of the three, England first heard of the land called Texas.
