6" x 9.25", 207 page hardcover titled EARHART'S FLIGHT INTO YESTERDAY: THE FACTS WITHOUT THE FICTION by Captain Laurance Safford with Cameron A. Warren & Robert R. Payne/ Paladwr Press, ISBN # 1-888962-20-8, First Edition, Copyright 2003/ This book is based upon a manuscript written by Safford, who died in 1973, and edited and updated by Warren and Payne. An introduction was written, apparently in 1971, by Robert Stanley, who also wrote one of the chapters. Stanley was a young Navy pilot in 1937 who participated in the Navy aerial search for Amelia Earhart. Robert Stanley was later a test pilot and an aviation parts manufacturer. Stanley was killed in an aircraft accident in 1977. Stanley's introduction is very arrogant and implies that he and Safford are correct and everyone else are wrong or are frauds. Safford strongly emphasizes the story of the radio communications between Earhart and the Coast Guard ship Itasca at Howland Island, and the subsequent search for Earhart by the Coast Guard ship and the search subsequently several days later by the US Navy ships and an aircraft carrier. There are many technical details in this book relating to the radio communications and aerial navigation, better than some other books, but not explained as completely as an interested non-expert might like. Safford and his later editors believe Earhart crashed and sank and disappeared after running out of fuel, and they completely dismiss several other books which say Earhart was captured by the Japanese and held captive as a spy, Safford describing those other books as merely conspiracy theories or completely mistaken or frauds. However, some other Earhart books say that there has been a massive cover-up by the US Government. It should be noted that this book authors Safford, Stanley, Warren, and Payne, were all US military veterans, with both Safford (famously) and Payne involved in secret military cryptography or cryptology, and presumably they were loyal to their oaths of Government secrecy when they denied any US Government conspiracy and cover-up. The last chapter, written by Warren, suggests that Earhart had on board her Electra aircraft a secret US Navy High Frequency (Radio) Direction Finder made by Bendix, which should have been sufficient for Earhart to find the Coast Guard ship with their radio transmissions at Howland Island, including High Frequency radio transmissions. The authors deny a spy mission by Earhart, but by reading "between the lines", a conspiracy theory could easily be developed which would make the standard and official story a complete falsehood and cover-up. The book is complete and in FINE or better condition with some overall light wear. The inside of the front dustjacket flap is creased. Signed on reverse of half-title page: "To Jane, It was a great pleasure meeting you. Thanks, Bob Payne" - Safford was writing this book when he died in 1973. Payne was assigned to finish work on the final draft, joining forces with Cam Warren, who had been working along similar lines. |
