Steven Spielberg's production is the brainchild of screenwriter Chris Columbus, director Joe Dante and producer Mike Finnell, who have concocted a morality fable blending dark macabre humour with serious horror and the air of a fairy tale. Chris Walas designed and articulated the animatronic GREMLINS.

It takes place at Christmastime in a perfect looking old-fashioned American small town. Madcap inventor Hoyt Axton buys a mysterious furry pet from Asian antique-shop owner Keye Luke for his son. He brings home the cuddly, wide-eyed creature he calls "Gizmo". Although Gizmo is benevolent, when rules of care are broken, he passes through an odd reproductive stage leading to the birth of impish, malevolent critters (sort of a cat/frog mixture) who create havoc. The resulting gremlins are both repulsive and amusing as they trash the town and mock everything sacred to the locals.

Zach Galligan and Phoebe Cates are the teen stars with Corey Feldman, Dick Miller, and Judge Reinhold. Spielberg makes a brief cameo appearence in there somewhere too. The hit movie spawned many imitations and a sequel.
