About the Book: Bandits tells the dramatic story of those folks who can be found in virtually every corner of the globe. They appear in history as Balkan haiduks, Indian dacoits, Peruvian congaceiros, yet all are members of the same criminal society whose spectacular exploits have been romanticized and preserved in legend and ballad. Some, like Janosik, Sung Chiang or Lampiao, are known only to their countrymen; others, like Jesse James and Robin Hood, have been sung around the world.

Festooned with guns and gold pieces, these brigands emerge as champions of social justice, primitive liberation fighters, and more recently as political 'expropriators' whose plunderage is dedicated to some modern revolutionary cause.

Who were the bandits? How did they differ from those who admired or pursued them? What was their place in the economy and politics of frontier and backwoods? These and many other such questions are raised and explored in this fast-paced and fascinating history of myth and reality in the story of the Bandits.
