Nien Cheng and her husband chose to remain in China when the Communists took over in 1949. After her husband's death in 1957, Nien Cheng went to work in Shangai. In 1966 she was an all too obvious target for the paranoid, xenophobic, and culture-hating Cultural Revolutionists. She was arrested and placed in solitary confinement for nearly seven years.
