Rare 1st edition of Johnston's groundbreaking travelogue of the Congo River. Unlike later editions, contains 2 color fold-out maps, 2 original etchings, and numerous other illustrations. Sir Harry Hamilton Johnston, (1858 — 1927) was a British explorer, botanist, zoologist, artist, and pioneer colonial administrator. Widely traveled in Africa and speaking many African languages, he published 40 books on African subjects and from 1891 to 1895 served as the first British consul general and commissioner in Nyasaland (now Malawi).
