Provenance: Gifted to me in 1966 during the period when the Herend Factory was Nationalized post WWII in 1948 and the quality of craftsmanship was resurrected to the highest standard. The cache pot has since been part of my personal estate collection and I usually displayed it holding a large lush maiden hair fern (interior was protected with a plastic liner).

Crafting: Made of porcelain, the finest of ceramic materials. The word "ceramics" comes from the Greek Kerameia, which means "fired". Porcelain often termed the “white wonder” is made of ceramic material heated to high temperatures in a kiln resulting in hard paste porcelain. It consists of 3 main materials: kaolin, quartz, and feldspar. Kaolin is the most important ingredient, even though it accounts for only a small proportion of the mix. Herend's porcelains are hand painted, hand glazed and triple fired. The value of their hard paste porcelain is mainly due to the labor intensive fabrication by highly-qualified master artisans who create the beautiful incomparable designs and coloration.

Important to Note: In decades since I acquired the cache pot, the design was changed from 2 birds to 3 as was the shell motif of the molded handles. In my opinion, this rare vintage edition of the design that I have not seen for sale anywhere else is more attractive. Also some of the current ones sold by purveyors of luxury goods are not fabricated at the Hungarian factory, but are "made in the USA of imported materials"! See screenshot of this disclosure at a Herend authorized agent's website.

Fact and Legend: Beginning in the 1850s, members of the European Rothschild family became important customers and patrons of the Herend Porcelain Manufactory. The bird pattern was named Rothschild Decor (RO) in honor of them in 1860. The motif was inspired by the garden of their Vienna residence where the birds were purported to have been seen playing with a pearl and gold necklace that was lost by a Baroness. They are said to symbolize the relationship of love, and the two sexes finding each other. The pair of songbirds, colorful butterflies and little bugs and foliate forms create a charming nature inspired design.

Dimensions: 8,25" H x 9.50" W

Bonus: Felt tabs have been applied to the bottom unglazed support rim to prevent scratching of any surface on which the cache pot may be placed.
