This photo is from December 31, 1939 from the Broadway Musical play Hot Mikado which he played Mikado at the Hanna Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio. This photo has been hand signed in black steel-tip fountain pen and inscribed To Joe - Sincerely Joe Robinson. There is a diagonal crease at the bottom left 3 1/4" up left border and out 2 3/4" bottom border. The center of this diagonal crease comes out 2 1/8" into the background. A couple other small dings overall a very nice photo with a great image of Bill Robinson. Bill Robinson, nicknamed Bojangles, was an American tap dancer, actor, and singer, the best known and the most highly paid African-American entertainer in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. His career began in the age of minstrel shows and moved to vaudeville, Broadway theatre, the recording industry, Hollywood films, radio, and television. He is best know for his films dancing with Shirley Temple The Little Colonel (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1935), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1938), Just Around the Corner (1938), and for starring in the musical Stormy Weather (1943) loosely based on his own life and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
