With Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, be proved himself a master of big-budget action. But he really got the town's attention when he wed actress Geena Davis. And now he's directing his mate in the high-risk pirate adventure Cut-throat Island--with Carolco Pictures poised to walk the plank if it fails.

Cutthroat Island's High Roller BY CORIE BROWN Though he's bankrolled some of the biggest hits of all time (Rambo, Terminator 2, Basic Instinct), Super Mario Kassar, chairman of Carolco, is now out of cash and plagued by the IRS. Still, those who know him weil don't count him out. "I call him the Phoenix," says director George P. Cosmatos. "He always has another life."

Along for the ride: Gene Hackman and Leonardo DiCaprio, who teases big-sisterly star Sharon Stone by saying she's "not a bag of snot." ("From a nineteen-year-old, I take that as a high, high com-pliment," she says. If Sergio Leone is turning over in his grave, Raimi will prob-ably use the image in his next movie.
