Vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the 1920's WWI-themed drama/romance, HEAVEN ON EARTH, released in 1927 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and directed by Phil Rosen. Young Edmond Durand (Conrad Nagel) has been reared under the autocratic influence of his aunt (Marcia Manon), who directs a large silk mill in southern France. He revolts against a stifling career planned for him and leaves home with Marcelle, a Gypsy girl (Renée Adorée). They roam the countryside with a Gypsy caravan in romantic bliss; they are inadvertently separated but at the outbreak of war are reunited. When peace is restored, the lovers find happiness together. The cast includes Gwen Lee, Julia Swayne Gordon, Pat Hartigan, Bernard Siegel, and Leon Janney.
The image features an exterior shot at a wooded setting as a young French woman, Marcelle (Renée Adorée), suspected of being a French spy, is being led away by German soldiers while an older man and her Aunt Emilie (Julia Swayne Gordon) watch helplessly in the background. The verso features a printed caption that describes the image. It is in fine+ condition with ight signs of wear on the bottom right corner; a tiny tear with a 1 in. vertical crease beneath it near the top of the left border; signs of very light wear along portions of the bottom edge; and a light vertical curl along the side edges, so it does not lie completely flat. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, writing, or other flaws.
The May 1, 1926 Motion Picture News reported that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer changed the title from The Escape to Heaven on Earth.
