Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the 1920's WWI-themed comedy, THE GENTLEMAN FROM AMERICA, released in 1923 by Universal Pictures and directed by Edward Sedgwick. Two Army buddies, Dennis O'Shane (Hoot Gibson) and Johnny Day (Tom O'Brien), decide to take their furlough in Paris but instead end-up in Spain. There, Dennis falls in love with Carmen Navarro (Louise Lorraine). In the guise of a bandit he rescues her from a forced marriage to Juan Gonzales (Jack Crane) and is elected overlord of the province. Eventually, the military police apprehend Dennis, but he promises to return to Carmen. The cast includes Carmen Phillips, Frank Lee, Robert McKenzie, Albert Prisco, Rosa Rosanova, Ricardo Cortez, Sidney De Gray, Burton Law, and Karl Silvera.
The image features US Army soldier Dennis O'Shane (Hoot Gibson) getting a dressing-down from a superior officer while his buddy, Johnny Day (Tom O'Brien) listens with one hand in his pocket. It is unrestored in fine+ condition with a small chip on the bottom left corner and a 1 in. vertical tear on the bottom border. There are no pinholes, creases, stains, writing, or other flaws and the color tints are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading.
According to a report in the Nov. 4, 1922 Motion Picture News, Hoot Gibson was ready to start shooting Alias Sebastino, an original story co-starring Louise Lorraine, which eventually became The Gentleman from America. Sydney De Grey, Burton Law, and Earl Silvera were listed among prospective cast members.
