David Carradine is the young Woodie Guthrie, hopping trains, hitchhiking, and singing during the years 1936-40. Songs include 'Deportees' and 'This Land is Your Land'. With Ronnie Cox ('Robocop', 'Total Recall'), Melinda Dillon ('Close Encounters of the Third Kind') as Guthrie's wife, Gail Strickland, Randy Quaid, M. Emmet Walsh, Ji-Tu Cumbuka, and James Hong.

Haskell Weller's cinematography received an Oscar (this was the first feature film to be partially shot with a steadycam). It's one of the best (and at nearly 150 minutes, the longest) of all the films on the Depression era and was nominated for several Oscars. The United Artists soundtrack includes cuts by Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, the Weavers, and others.

Hal Ashby made the hit 'Coming Home' next. Carradine went on to Ingmar Bergman's the 'Serpents Egg', then more drive-in movies.
