The purpose of this manual is to summarize the methods employed at present by the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey in executing first-order traverse. It is designed primarily for the engineers and mathematicians of this bureau engaged in the execution of the field work and making office computations. Very little space has been given to the actual routing of making invar tape measurements, except where the methods differ from those of base measurement. The computations which are the same as for triangulation have been only briefly mentioned.
