Offered is a wonderful anthropology book from a large Black Americana collection entitled When the World was Young, by M Jourdan Atkinson. The Naylor Co, copyright 1957. Hand inscribed in blue ink to "our" friend- (our is Mrs Dr Pearce and "Jean  Manse") M Jourdan Atkinson. With the book is a photo from the Hotel del Prado, Mexico, showing Manet Fowler and Dr M Jourdan Atkinson, William Ascom, Margaret Mead and others, taken about 1961 at the American Anthropological Association. This comes from Manet Fowlers estate, email for more information on her families prominent roll in changing perceptions towards African Americans in the US. Manet was the first african American doctoral graduate in anthropology in the US, from Cornell University. Her mother Manet Harrison Fowler, a singer, dancer, founder of the Mwalimu School of African Art, National Association of Negro Musicians, Tuskegee with George Washington Carver in 1912, painter and more, Father Stephen Fowler, founder of the Fort Worth black YMCA, Baptist Deacon and more. An important work, with important provenance. This would make a wonderful addition to any collection. We have many items from this estate we will be listing.

Book in good condition. Hard bound cover and dust jacket. DJ torn torn with wear, foxing/soiling, fair condition. Text clean overall with good binding, some foxing inside covers. It measures 5 7/8" x 8 3/4" x 1/2". Photo folder soiled with tear repaired with tape inside. Photo itself good. A nice find.
