In an expressionist castle atop a Universal hill dwells Edward (Depp), a wild-haired artificial man left incomplete by the death of his fatherly inventor (Price), with sets of shears instead of hands. Price contributes touching flashbacks as the Gepetto cum Frankenstein figure, choosing to educate his creation in the skills which will be of most use to him in an ideal world, etiquette and poetry.

Depp's monster is at once a distorted image of his own creator, resembling Tim Burton in hair and pallor, and a leather-swathed recreation of the silent-film school of Caligariesque monsters, his scissor-knife hands a unique image of the limited usefulness of formidable weapons. 

Avon lady Dianne Wiest brings him to the pastel suburbs and he becomes the rage of the neighbourhood because of his ability to work topiary and hairstyling miracles, and then an outcast freak when his good intentions are misunderstood.
