Semi-Conical Dome Shield Boss,

Medium 7.5" Diameter, 2.5" Deep

Heavy Duty 14 Gauge Steel

Fully Functional

The boss was originally designed to deflect blows from the center of shields, making it more difficult to split or sunder them with axes or other heavy weapons. Later they were used in faster and smaller bucklers for deflecting blows from longswords, backswords, and rapiers. Ideal for the re-enactor crafting his or her own shield, these heavy-duty 14 gauge steel bosses are spun and then polished to remove the spinning marks before being pre-drilled with 1/4" holes for attachment to the shield. This 7-1/2"" diameter version has a slightly flattened hemispherical cup as shown in photos.  The size allows adequate room for gloved hands if designing a buckler or center held shield, and gauntleted hands if the grip is offset slightly. The 14 gauge mild steel this is made of should be stronger than the newer 18 gauge stainless steel version, and is considerably less expensive. Weight is approximately 1-1/4 lbs.

The 14 G bosses come in 3 sizes (6”, 7.5” and a new 9.5" diameter) plus this one which is 7.5" but shape is slightly different as face of dome is slightly flattened. There's also an 18 G stainless with 9.25" diameter. See photos for comparison. Just chose the one that's right for your application. Any questions, just ask!

Comments: Recommended. If you're making a shield or buckler, this is what you need. There are a couple of slightly different designs from same manufacturer on the market now so it can get confusing. I know several people that have incorporated these and they work beautifully. I'm a collector and a weekend warrior, active in my local HEMA group - I sell what I own and can recommend.
