From the Estate of Mary Pickford is this vintage original 8x10 in. US single-weight glossy photograph from the classic 1920's silent film comedy/drama romance, SUDS, released in 1920 by United Artists and directed by John Francis Dillon. A London laundress (Mary Pickford) attempts to rise above her station in order to capture the love of a wealthy young man (Albert Austin), thus missing out on the truer love of one of her own class (Harold Goodwin). The cast includes Rose Dione, Darwin Karr, Lavender the Horse, Taylor N. Duncan, Joan Marsh.
The image features an exterior scene of the poor young London laundress, Amanda Affleck (Mary Pickford), as she has a rough encounter with a burly sailor who wants money from her. It is in fine+ condition with two small creases on the bottom left corner with a small area of discoloration to the right of them in the bottom border and light signs of wear on the bottom right corner. There are no pinholes, tears, stains, writing, or other flaws.
Provenance: The Estate of Mary Pickford.
The working titles for the film were The Duchess of Suds and Op O' Me Thumb. Three cameras were used in the shooting of this production, which was awarded the Board of Merit of the Motion Picture Theatrical Association's first seal of approval. Contemporary sources state that the harsh conclusion generated such widespread criticism that a second, happy ending was filmed, in which Amanda lives happily on Lady Burke's estate with Lavender and Ben. |
