This edition has been abridged for younger readers from the original edition, and includes topic questions and study aids suitable for a elementary of middle school classroom.  The story has several similarities to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS by RUDYARD KIPLING -- a young boy from a wealthy family in the city has become a runaway, and is taken in by the poor Sparks family, who survive the hazards of the Kentucky backwoods inside their one-room cabin.  The boy discovers a side to life to which he has never been exposed, and finds comfort and safety with his new family -- until his wealthy father discovers the boy's whereabouts, and threatens to take him back home.
