Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the classic 1950's WWII-themed drama, THE YOUNG LIONS, released in 1958 by 20th Century-Fox and directed by Edward Dmytryk. Based upon the novel by Irwin Shaw, this WW2 drama follows the lives of three young men, one German and two Americans, during wartime. The cast includes Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, Dean Martin, Hope Lange, Barbara Rush, May Britt, Maximilian Schell, Dora Doll, and Lee Van Cleef.

As indicated in the center of the bottom border, this is lobby card #5 from the set of 8 cards. The image depicts an exterior scene of German Lt. Christian Diestl (Marlon Brando) giving the Nazi salute to a superior officer riding in an open military vehicle. It is unrestored in fine condition with pinholes and light signs of wear on the corners; a few scattered creases in the borders; and two small tears on the right border.

Novelist Irwin Shaw was not happy about Marlon Brando's sympathetic portrayal of the Nazi soldier. This was a conscious decision on the part of Brando, director Edward Dmytryk, and screenwriter Edward Anhalt, who felt that a more lenient depiction would be more representative of the German people as a whole. (Not coincidentally, the German market had opened up considerably after WWII and represented a significant opportunity for Hollywood movies to make a profit). Montgomery Clift commented upon Brando's performance during the filming, calling him a slob and that he was using only about one third of his talent.
