JOAN GROWE was Minnesota's Secretary Of State from 1975 to 1999. In 1984, she ran for the United States Senate as a member of the Minnesota Democrat-Farmer-Labor Party, against then-sitting Minnesota U. S. Senator RUDY BOSCHWITZ, a member of the Minnesota Independent Republican Party. Growe lost the election.
