Measures 8-1/2" X 10-31/32", 255 pp, b&w photos, written by Tony Thomas, oversized trade paperback published by Citadel Press (NY).
Based upon a 1980s PBS-TV series of the same name, this book offers a superb examination of 40 key American films in the "western" genre, and how each one depicted cowboys, gunfighters and western history in general. Some of the films treated the subjects in a purely imaginary manner, while others made at least some attempt at historic realism. This book is also one of the few that attempts to demonstrate the significant change in the post-World War II westerns, from idle "shoot 'em ups," to films of social significance. The book is jammed with b&w photos from each film, and belongs on the shelf of any individual who enjoys western films and/or western literature. The noted films are: RIDER OF DEATH VALLEY (1932); END OF THE TRAIL (1932); THE THUNDERING HERD (1933); SCARLET RIVER (1933); THE SUNDOWN RIDER (1933); IN OLD SANTA FE (1934); THE LAST OUTLAW (1936); TROUBLE IN TEXAS (1937); THE CHEROKEE STRIP (1937); THE PAINTED STALLION (1937); TEXAS TRAIL (1937); BORN TO THE WEST (1937); RAWHIDE (1937); LAWLESS VALLEY (1938); HEART OF THE NORTH (1938); ARIZONA BOUND (1941); MY DARLING CLEMENTINE (1946); PURSUED (1947); FORT APACHE (1948); STATION WEST (1948); BLOOD ON THE MOON (1948); COLORADO TERRITORY (1949); LUST FOR GOLD (1949); THE GUNFIGHTER (1950); DEVIL'S DOORWAY (1950); ROCKY MOUNTAIN (1950); BEST OF THE BADMEN (1951); SPRINGFIELD RIFLE (1952); MAN WITHOUT A STAR (1955); THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955); A MAN ALONE (1955); THE TALL T (1957); 3:10 TO YUMA (1957); THE UNFORGIVEN (1960); RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY (1962); WILL PENNY (1968); THE WILD BUNCH (1969); ULZANA'S RAID (1972); THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976); and THE SHOOTIST (1976).
